Tae Kwon Do stands for Hand Foot Way. It's a culmination for Wushu, Karate-do, and Taekyon. At this moment, it is the only martial art in the Olympics.
All of that being said, it's not the best, nor is it the worst. Every martial art is different, they have their ups and down, therefore it would be best to study all of them, but this might prove impractical. It would be best to stick to two or three and master each one. Consider each one to be a tool, and you want to repair a car; You will need multiple tools to complete the job otherwise you'll get stuck midway through. So yes, in my opinion it would be best to study a few martial art disciplines, and Tae Kwon Do would be a great place to start.
Tae Kwon Do teaches it's practitioners the basics of fighting at first and continues into more specialized skills. It combines the linear motions of Karate-do with the circular motions of Wushu, and the skills of Taekyon. It's purpose is not to kill, but to defend; it is about life. Tae Kwon Do seeks to improve it's practitioners mentality so that they can grew physically and spiritually.
Most people would confuse Tae Kwon Do with Karate-do, simply because of karate-do's spotlight in movies. Others would call it Kung Fu because because it is a martial art that they aren't aware of (also, Kung Fu means "Ability" in chinese, Wushu is the discipline that people mean to say unknowingly).
Tae Kwon Do will help anyone get a grasp on martial arts so that they can transfer that knowledge to to other arts if they wish to do so.
